Could Bone Spurs be Causing your #Headache?

#Headaches are a major problem for many patients but they can often be very complex in ther cause and cure. They are often managed with over the counter medications but this is not allwdreamstime_xl_48989184ays the best way to deal with chronic or prolonged headaches. Many of your chronic headaches often have bio-mechanical causes stemming from the musculo-skeletal system and these headaches are often best controlled and treated through simple gentle chiropractic care .

One such headache may be caused by bone spurs in the neck.

Over 50% of patients age of 60 and over have osteophytes also known as bone spurs, somewhere in their bodies. Osteophytes in the spine are more common the older we get and may not be a cause for concern unless they result in pain or neurological symptoms.

Cervical osteophytes or bone spurs that grow on any of the  vertebra in cervical spine, also referred to as the neck. may be found from the 7th cervical vertebra to the base of the skull to the base of the neck (C1 – C7 vertebrae). It is these osteophytes that may be responsible for a patients headaches.

Chiropractic Techniques Why so Many

Chiropractic adjustment Kingston and Wilkes Barre

#Chiropractic is a large and varied profession. There are at lest 100 different types of chiropractic adjusting techniques used world wide. The typically, chiropractor utilize 8 to 10 different techniques in there practice. It is in this way that chiropractors can approach many different problems.

All chiropractors uses these different approaches to with similar intents in mind. The universal goal of most chiropractic care is to restore or to improve joint function, with the end result of resolving joint inflammation and reducing pain. Some chiropractic techniques use minimal directed force often referred to as spinal manipulation, while others spinal mobilization, a series of gentle force procedures designed to free up the joints so they move on there own.

Diversified technique or the high-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) thrust is one of chiropractic more traditional forms of adjusting the spine. Newer approaches typically are variation from an existing technique and as they evolve they are often often named after the Doctor who developed that particular approach.

Chiropractic is safe!

This is my experience as a chiropractor in the Kingston and Wilkes-Bare for over 10 years. It is not always pain free and it often takes time but it is very safe and effective. The safety of chiropractic is discuses in a recent articular on the Chironexus website. “Chiropractic care has successfully relieved patients of spinal pain for over a hundred years, and a new study shows that chiropractic is not only effective, it’s safe.” There is a recent study performed in Australia where the effects of a chiropractic adjustment were compared to sham adjustments. and it was found that “The majority of patients did not experience any adverse events, regardless of whether or not they were treated with chiropractic or sham interventions.” This indicates that chiropractic adjustments are as safe as someone just putting there hands on you (a sham adjustment) but the health benefits are fare reaching and beneficial.  This study indicates that chiropractic care is a safe, effective, non-invasive way to relive low back as well as other spinal pain.

Chiropractic Care Improves Immunity According to Studies

immunity and your spine.

immunity and your spine.

Most folks are informed that chiropractic is a great method to reduce many pain disorders , but yet an escalating body of scientific studies would suggest it may also boost immunity .

Earlier research shows that spinal adjustments could affect distinctive immune system responses in both well individuals as well as back-pain sufferers . At the same time there are no significant literature reviews of the over-all benefit of chiropractic on immunity . In a current speech at the 9th Chiropractic , Osteopathy , and Physiotherapy Yearly Seminar in England , Jack Neil of the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic examined the available materials on spinal manipulative therapy ( SMT ) and immune responses .

After investigating the medical research until January 2012 , Neil established that spinal adjustments are linked to an essential anti-inflammatory response . Findings imply that SMT can result in a down regulating of pro-inflammatory cytokines together with a boost in antibodies associated with the immune system reaction . Additionally, SMT might help to increase the generation of small cells labeled as leukocytes which assistance the white blood-cells in battling a threat . SMT may additionally have an affect on Natural Killer cells , interleukin-2 activity , TNF-a levels , cortisol , and b-endorphin levels .

The mechanisms behind most of these processes remain unclear at this time having said that . There is certainly inadequate research still to understand whether or not these types of inflammatory changes associate with a marked improvement in symptoms and signs .”Most medical research to date has targeted on asymptomatic men and women with short term benefits . The hurdle at present will be to clinically study ongoing physical health benefits in symptomatic individuals ,” Neil determined .

However additional research is necessary , more recent research implies that chiropractic adjustments can create favorable differences in the immune mechanism . These particular immunological improvements might reveal exactly why chiropractic is able to reduce inflammation as well as pain while helping over-all health and well being .

Feb. 28, 2011 — Fever may be beneficial when it comes to fighting infection, according to new advice from pediatricians.

New guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics urge parents to recognize fever as a sign that the body is working to fight infection and not something to be feared.

Instead, they say the main goal of treating fever in children should be to keep them comfortable while watching for any signs of serious illness rather than focusing on keeping their temperature within a “normal” range.

“Fever makes many parents do whatever they can to bring their child’s fever down into a normal range. Fever is not a danger itself; it usually is a benefit,” Henry Bernstein, MD, chief of general pediatrics at the Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York, says in an email.

“Parents need to know that fever is not something to fear, but more of a friend that shows the body is fighting the infection.”

Urinary Incontinence May Improve With Chiropractic Care

NEW RESEARCH
Urinary Incontinence May Improve
With Chiropractic Care
81% of chiropractic case showed improvement

Based upon the prevalence of urinary incontinence in our population and the conclusion that the vast majority of the population is being under treated, the public must take an honest look at treatment choices.

Chiropractic, based upon the results shouldn’t be considered an alternative choice, but the first line of care with no side effects to consider from medications.

Preventing Chronic Neck Pain and Back Pain

Treating chronic back pain and neck pain from a whiplash injury

Neck and hip joint © 7activestudio

After a car accident neck pain is one of the primary complaints. This is due to the fact the the head weighs around 10 lbs and during acceleration and deceleration that can create a lot of force on some of the smaller muscles and ligaments of the body, the result is whiplash and neck pain. After a whiplash injury, it is fairly common for people to suffer from chronic neck pain and back pain. During a chiropractic examination certain factors in a patient’s history an physical exam can be used to evaluate for this possibility. This process will help the chiropractor identify the patient who is at risk of developing chronic pain resulting from a whiplash injury, so that aggressive preventative measures can be taken.
At Mahler family Chiropractic Center, in Kingston Pa, the general approach to managing a patient’s chiropractic treatment is critical to the success of preventing chronic pain from a whiplash injury.

  • It is important that the patients pain be reduced in the first several weeks of treatment.
  • After This the focus shifts toward restoration of the function of the patients joints and muscles using both active and passive therapy procedures. This also means helping the patient return to work, home and recreational activities as soon as possible. The transition back to these activities is often gradual and takes time. It is important for the chiropractor to get the patient back to these activities even if the patient is not sure that he or she can engage in them fully.
  • It is important that the patient gets back to normal activities and restoring the patients confidence after a whiplash injury is an important part of the chiropractor s job and also important for rehabilitation.
  • Exercise, both for the purpose of correcting faulty movement patterns and instability, and for general fitness, is important in this effort to treat a whiplash injury.

Teaching the patient that hurt does not necessarily mean harm and the nature of chronic pain means placing focus on those activities the patient can do, rather than those they can not perform. This is a major part of treating chronic pain and in disability prevention after a whiplash injury. At Mahler Family Chiropractic Center we integrate the strategies explained above to develop the most effective approach for recovering from a whiplash injury and preventing future episodes of back pain.

Chiropractic: Sensory Processing Disorders in Children (SPD)

Often it is asked, how can chiropractic help my special needs child? Chiropractic Kids and chiropracticdirectly influences the functioning of the nervous system, and it is this connection that often helps children with special needs. The central nervous system acts as the master control system for the entire body, but this is a simplistic and basic answer. Since the central nervous system connects the brain to the rest of the body it is partially responsible for the way we interpret the world and what information we take in. We will see why this is so important later in the article. Due to recent developments in the fields of chiropractic and chiropractic neurology are leading to better explanations to this link and this is creating better implement it in a clinical stetting. With modern instrumentation and research techniques there is new information coming out on a regular basis.

What is this new information? First we must understand Sensory Processing Disorders or SPD. What are Sensory Processing Disorders? Sensory Processing Disorders are “a neurodevelopmental disorder resulting from the brain’s inability to integrate everyday sensory information revived from the five senses: touch, vision, sound, smell and taste.” (Buerger, Monika DC, Pathways, Issue 19, pg 19) SPD is also includes the two lesser known senses, the vestibular and proprioception systems. The vestibular system located in the lower part of the brain called the cerebellum and the upper spinal-cord called the cervical spine and is the master regulator of all incoming sensory information ( Buerger, Monika DC, Pathways, Issue 19, pg 19). It is at this point that we start to see the development of the link between chiropractic care and SPD and it is through these links that individualized treatment can be developed thorough testing of all of these sensory systems. Once the sensory systems involved determined they can then be addressed directly and indirectly.

Sensory deficient are defined as ether hypo or hyper sensitive. Children who are hypersensitive are bombarded by sensory information and will often appear withdrawn from society because the constant bombardment of sensory input makes their brains uncomfortable (Buerger, Monika DC, Pathways, Issue 19, pg 19). This is due to the fact that the brain is unable to filter out much of the incoming information from that set of senses. The Brain will usually only let a fraction of the sensory information enter the conscious mind while the rest of the input is processed by the subconscious mind or disregarded all together. A child who is hyposensitive will seek out sensory experiences to stimulate their brains due to lack of sensory input (Buerger, Monika DC, Pathways, Issue 19, pg 19). There are many other symptoms depending on which sensory pathways are involved and to which degree but this can be sorted out using a  complete history and a thorough examination. After the information from the exam and history is obtained it is possible to implement a treatment protocol which customized to that child’s needs.

Sensory Processing Disorders is often misdiagnosed in children as ADD, ADHD, and other neuro-developmental disorders (Buerger, Monika DC, Pathways, Issue 19, pg 19). To complicate maters Sensory Processing Disorders can also co-exist with many of these conditions including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, and Traumatic Brain Injury as well as others and can persist if untreated into adult hood and follow the child for the rest of there lives. The medical approach is to diagnose these children with conditions such as ADHD and then prescribe psychotropic drugs such as Ritalin (Buerger, Monika DC, Pathways, winter 2005, pg 3). It is important that parents educate themselves on the side effects of these medications and realize that if the child is misdiagnosed many of these medications may have the opposite effect.

So how is the chiropractic approach different? “In 2004, Dr. Melillo published a textbook titled Neuro-behavioral Disorders of Childhood – An Evolutionary Perspective, which describes what he believes to be the primary neuro-physiologic mechanism that produces many of the most common neuro-behavioral disorders. Applying this neuro-physiologic mechanism to chiropractic, he focuses on three main areas: sensory/motor systems, biomechanical/nutritional, and neuropsychological, with the main concept revolving around hemispheric balance.” (Claudia Anrig, DC. http://www.dynamicchiropractic.com/mpacms/dc/article.php?id=51097&no_paginate=true&p_friendly=true&no_b=true) From the chiropractic perspective postural imbalances caused by vertebral misalignment and nervous system involvement (subluxations) are sought out and treated. This treatment removes the effect on the neurological system from a structural stand point allowing for improved neurological function. This is accomplished trough standard chiropractic modes of treatment. The nervous system if further address through addressing the sensory deficiency and directly retraining these systems to mature and function correctly. Finally some of the nutritional components are considered such as hypo or hyper glycemia and the effects that sugar and other allergens may have on the system.

This is by no means a complete understanding of how chiropractic may affect sensory processing disorders and the treatments are often very individualized for each set of circumstances. After reading this article it should start to become obvious way a chiropractor might be a great addition to the team used to treat and improve the quality of life for your child. This is a brief understanding of how the chiropractic field can bring a novel new approach to children with SPD as well as other nuro-sensory disorders such as ADD, ADHD, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
