Chiropractic Treatments for Whiplash

Chiropractic Treatments for #Whiplash

Because each individual case of whiplash is different, it is not possible to generalize about the chiropractic whiplash treatment.

See What Is Whiplash?

The appropriate chiropractic treatment is unique to each whiplash injury and is directed at the primary dysfunctions detected during the chiropractic exam.

However, #chiropractors commonly employ different chiropractic treatments for whiplash, often including:

1:#Manipulation

2:Muscle relaxation and/or stimulation

3:Various #exercises

4:Ergonomic and lifestyle changes.

This article explains when, why and how chiropractors may employ these whiplash treatments for neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain and other related symptoms.

Is chiropractic safe, what do the studies show?

Chiropractic is safe!

This is my experience as a chiropractor in the Kingston and Wilkes-Bare for over 10 years. It is not always pain free and it often takes time but it is very safe and effective. The safety of chiropractic is discuses in a recent articular on the Chironexus website. “Chiropractic care has successfully relieved patients of spinal pain for over a hundred years, and a new study shows that chiropractic is not only effective, it’s safe.” There is a recent study performed in Australia where the effects of a chiropractic adjustment were compared to sham adjustments. and it was found that “The majority of patients did not experience any adverse events, regardless of whether or not they were treated with chiropractic or sham interventions.” This indicates that chiropractic adjustments are as safe as someone just putting there hands on you (a sham adjustment) but the health benefits are fare reaching and beneficial.  This study indicates that chiropractic care is a safe, effective, non-invasive way to relive low back as well as other spinal pain.

Chiropractic and Neck Pain: New study reveals it is the most effective treatment

Chiropractic is safe and effective for neck pain.

As a chiropractor I have always told my patients that in most case, when it comes to neck pain the best medicine is no medicine at all. Now according to a new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine studies are now showing this it true (http://www.annals.org/content/156/1_Part_1/1.abstract?aimhp). The study, was funded by the National Institutes of Health, tracked 272 patients with recent neck pain. These patients were treated using three different methods medication, exercise, and chiropractic care.

After 12 weeks the patients who used a chiropractor or exercised were over twice as likely to be pain free when compared to those who used only medicine. The patients treated by a chiropractor experienced the highest rate of success with 32 percent saying they were pain free, compared to 30 percent of those who exercised. Only 13 percent of patients treated with medication said they no longer experienced pain.

As a chiropractor this does not supries me since neck pain is a mechanical problem. It makes sense that mechanical treatment such as chiropractic care and exercies work better than a medicin which is a chemical solution. The pain is not due to difficiny in anti-inflamatories. Acording to an ABC world News report Dr. John Messmer who specializes in family medicine at Penn State College of Medicine agrees. “I always prescribe exercises and/or physical therapy for neck pain,” he wrote. “I also tell patients that the exercises are the treatment and the drugs are for the symptoms.” The exercises prescribed to patients in the study were simple and designed to be performed at home with the help of instructional photos, see the exercies here (http://www.annals.org/content/suppl/2011/12/29/156.1_Part_1.1.DC1/156-1-1-supplement.pdf).

You must also keep in mind the other finding in the studie that chiropractic care was actualy mor effective than even exercise so if your Doctor only perscribes exercises and Physical theripy remind them that chiropractic is more effective and can work well with thes two treatment options. It is also important to remember that chiropractic care is not for just neck pain and back pain but a good chiropractor should be part of your health and wellness team. I will even assign exercises to go with the chiropractic care increasing the effectiveness of treatment.

What is Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic health care a drug free solution!

Thoracic Spine Anatomy Pain concept © decade3d

Chiropractic is a health care system that targets the central nervous system via the spinal column to help maintain good health. A chiropractor leverages the recuperative power of the body to cure itself naturally and efficiently. Chiropractic health care focuses on the connection between the vertebral column alignment and performance as coordinated by the nerve network and how that association affects the preservation and regaining of health.

Chiropractic care involves analyzing and treating the cause of disease which occurs when the spinal column is misaligned or subluxated. The bones of the spinal column when misaligned interrupt the messages of the nerves in the central nervous system. These messages balance and control cells, tissues, and organs of the body. Chiropractors address these subluxations and by delicately changing the alignment of the vertebrae, reduce or alleviate abnormal communication in the nervous system permitting the human body to appropriately operate and repair.

A Chiropractic Physicians Treatment is Distinct from Traditional Medical Care

If you’re considering visiting a Kingston Chiropractors or a Chiropractor near Wilkes Barre PA for the 1st time, you’re most likely wondering what kind of results you can anticipate. Having realistic expectations is important. A Chiropractic specialist’s will explain the chiropractic process and therapy and how it is being presented may have a vital role in the satisfaction with the adjustment you receive. Your experience will be improved by an explanation leading to understanding of the service itself, but don’t mistake chiropractic treatment for medical therapy. A chiropractors is not meant to replace medical physicians. A Medical Doctor addresses disease while a chiropractic specialist focuses on health. Not having a disease is very different than actually being healthy. The purpose of chiropractic therapy is to improve your health and well-being not simply to treat your illness.

Before visiting a chiropractor it is important to under stand that chiropratic is not just for back pain, neck pain and othe phisical aliaments but for over all health. As well as over all health a chiropractor can help manage auto accidents, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, headaches, migraines, herniated disc, neck pain, sciatica, sports injuries, scoliosis, back pain, and much more. A chiropractor can treat infants, the elderly, children, audults, children with special needs, and pregnant women. Chiropractic physycians are for much more than just neck and back pain.

Can a Chiropractic Physician Help?

The short answer is often yes. Spinal subluxations are generally due to stress that overwhelms the body’s resilience and coping ability. This stress can be physical stress and can occur as the result of an automobile accident or slipping on a wet sidewalk, improper posture, occupational trauma, or birth trauma. It can be emotional stress as a result of heavy emotional shock or the inability to adjust to a stressful event, or even chemical shock as a result from the inappropriate usage of prescription or illicit drugs, inadequate food stuffs, or environmental poisons. These misalignments disrupt the standard function, reducing your body’s capability to operate, evolve, and heal from injuries by creating interference within the nervous system.

Chiropractic Physicians address these misalignments by delicately fixing the alignment of the backbones of the spinal column, reducing or alleviating abnormal messaging so permitting the body to properly self regulate, adapt and regenerate. The care and upkeep of the spinal column and nerve system is a necessary component of healthcare. Spinal hygiene is more important that dental hygiene but often neglected due to lack of understanding. Your Wilkes Barre and Kingston PA Chiropractors will assist you to start chiropractic care with this understanding so you will appreciate the whole process of recieving chiropractic therapy.

Pain relief and how to treat neck pain

© Russiangal | Dreamstime.com

Neck pain affects millions of Americans and if you have ever woken up with a kink in your neck, suffered a whiplash injury, experienced chronic neck stiffness, felt popping and crackling whenever you move your neck around or suffer with chronic nagging pain in your neck that travels up into the back of your head, you know what I’m talking about. this can be intensely irritating and cause a disruption in your daily life. Neck pain can affect your ability to concentrate, sleep, play sports, read, do household chores or even watch TV.

What causes neck pain? Neck pain may be caused by any number of causes including car accidents, falls, emotional stress and chemical toxins. Neck pain occurs when the bones in your spine become misaligned causing severe irritation the muscles, ligaments, tendons, and to the nervous system causing pain. Spinal misalignment also stretches and severely irritates the spinal cord & sets the stage for premature wear and tear of the spinal cord and nerve roots. That pain in the neck may even be a pinched nerve.

One of the main causes of neck pain is trauma. A car accident, slip and fall, the birth process, a sports injury or some other type of trauma can cause damage to the bones, joints, discs, ligaments, muscles and other connective tissues of the neck. If you have experienced any kind of trauma past or present you should have it checked out. Neck injuries can lie under the surface for years before you notice major symptoms such as pain or numbness and by then it may be too late for a complete recovery. Chiropractors are uniquely qualified to evaluate, diagnose and treat neck problems due to trauma. A chiropractor can even tell you if that pain in the shoulder is referred from the neck.

Medical Approach

A common approach to treating neck pain involves going to a pharmacy for an over the counter (OCT) medication such as Tylenol, Motrin or Aleve. These medications sometimes work to offer temporary relief. However the problem usually comes back. At this point, many people will call their family doctor for help. The family doctor’s typical course of action will be to prescribe more powerful medications (such as a narcotic for the pain and muscle relaxants). Medications don’t really do much other than to mask symptoms. They don’t actually cure you or go after the root cause of your problems.

Chiropractic Approach: How to treat neck pain

At Mahler Family Chiropractic Center, we offer a unique approach to treating neck problems. Our methods are extremely effective at getting you out of pain, restoring range of motion, improving posture, and correcting misalignment. We have treated people who had been to numerous medical doctors, various therapists and even other chiropractors and weren’t getting any results until they came to us. Our methods are different and they work. Please call our office to schedule an appointment for a free, no-obligation consultation.

Laser Therapy for Neck Pain:

Recently the medical journal Lancet performed a review of studies and concluded from the results that low-level laser therapy is immediately effective for acute neck pain. Lasers therapy is effective within the first treatment and lasts up to 22 weeks following a complete treatment protocol for chronic neck pain. The study reviewed 16 previous studies and found laser therapy to be effective overall, with results comparing “favorably with other widely used therapies, and especially with pain killers and other medications, for which evidence is sparse and side-effects are common.” That’s good news considering that neck pain is one of the most common and disabling conditions, accounting for substantial lost workdays, diminished productivity, and use of over-the-counter medications. If you suffer from chronic neck pain call us now and we may be able to help.

Phases of Care

PHASE ONE: RELIEF CARE / ACUTE PHASE

INITIAL TREATMENT: Many people seek out chiropractic care because they are in pain. During the first phase of care, the main goal is to reduce your symptoms, including the pain. Sometimes this will require daily visits, or two to three visits per week for a time. During this phase of care it is important to retrain soft tissue. To retrain soft tissue it must hold the new pattern for at lest one week therefore treatment cycles of over one week do not accomplish this goal.

One of the many misconceptions when patients start treatment is “if I don’t feel any pain that there is nothing wrong with me – I am healthy.” Unfortunately, pain is a very poor indicator of health and often pain and other symptoms only appear after a disease or other condition have become advanced.  Pain is the typically the last indicator that something is wrong and the first one to leve. It is for this reason that people often re-injure themselves or drop out of care to soon.

For example, consider a cavity in your tooth. Does it hurt when it first develops or only after it has become serious? How about heart disease or cancer? Often a paper cut hurts worse than any of these conditions do in the early stages. Regardless of whether you are talking about cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stress or problems with the spine, pain is usually the last thing to appear. When you begin chiropractic care, pain is also the first symptom to disappear, even though much of the underlying condition remains.

PHASE TWO: CORRECTIVE CARE / STRENGTHENING PHASE

The easiest part of the chiropractor’s job is the elimination of pain. If all that the chiropractor does is to reduce the pain and stop, the chances of the condition recurring are much greater. It is at this point that the patient is most likely to  re-injure themselves. In order to prevent a rapid recurrence of symptoms, it is necessary to continue receiving care even though the PAIN symptom is gone.

During the correction / restorative phase of your care the chiropractic adjustment is important but not the only treatment required. The patient moves into a strengthening period,  and exercise as well as other therapies to improve rang of motion and proprioception are used in conjunction with the chiropractic adjustments.  During this phase of care, depending on your particular circumstances, you may begin doing exercises and stretches at the office as well as at home to help accelerate your healing.

Do not be discouraged if you have mild flare-ups of your symptoms on occasion. This is normal. Flare-ups are bound to occur during this phase because your body has not fully healed. Depending on the severity of your injury or condition and how long you have been suffering, this phase of your care may last anywhere from a few months to a couple of years.

PHASE THREE: WELLNESS CARE / WELLNESS PHASE

The key to health is maintainance and once your body has fully healed, routine chiropractic care can help ensure that your physical problems do not return, and keep your body in optimal condition. It is important to think of spinal hygiene at this point. Just like dental hygiene your spine need ongoing care from you chiropractor as well as home maintenance such as exercise and stretching. Just like continuing an exercise program and eating well in order to sustain the benefits of exercise and proper diet, it is necessary to continue chiropractic care to ensure the health of your musculoskeletal system.

When you make routine chiropractic care a part of your lifestyle, you avoid many of the aches and pains that so many people suffer through, your joints will last longer, and you will be able to engage in more of the activities you love. Spinal hygiene is important for everyone.

POSTURE PROBLEMS

Common postural abnormalities include rotations  distortions and anterior or posterior distortions. Examples of these are anterior head tilt, tilting of the pelvis, thorax and head and rotational distortions of the pelvis thorax and neck. Posture distortions fatigue and abnormal loading on the joints, discs, muscles and other connective tissues.

Posture problems aren’t self-correcting and unfortunately you can’t fix your own posture any more than you can fix a front end alignment problem in your car. But don’t worry because chiropractors are able to correct abnormal postures including even stubborn ones such as forward head posture, a high shoulder or pelvic unbalancing. Our methods spinal realignment coupled with exercises to strengthen and stabilise the supportive soft tissues (the muscles & ligaments which hold the spine together). You’ll feel better and look better too! Postural distortion may be the primary cause of back and neck pain.

Chiropractors are uniquely qualified to check and treat these abnormality and at Mahler family chiropractic center we are here to help you. If you think you may have postural problems contact your chiropractor today.
