Antibiotics Don’t Fight Most Sinus Infections

The new study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, and reported on Fox News, “found antibiotics didn’t ease patients’ symptoms or get them back to work any sooner than an inactive placebo pill.”

So what should you do? There are several facts to keep in mind. The first is, when healthy your body is programmed to fight off these infections more efficiently than any antibiotic. The fever, chills, coughing, and runny noes are all symptoms of the cold. These symptoms are also the bodies way of fighting the infection. The fever kills the infection by raising your body temperature above the temperature at which the infection can survive, the cough is expelling the germs and dead tissue from your body, and the mucus is full of lysosomes that kill both bacteria and viruses. Sure you fell terrible but this is how you get better.

So next time you get that tickle in the back of your throat, let the symptoms get you better. Don’t supress the fever and the cough and also let mucus do its job. Why not help your body. Wrap your self up in a blanket, drink hot liquids (raises the temperature in the throat helping kill the infection), and keep yourself hydrated. You may fell terrible but you will often recover quicker than suppressing your bodies natural immune response and it will work far better than antibiotics.

Just another reason to exercise. “Researchers assessed the health of more than 45,000 men and nearly 15,000 women, ages 20 to 88 years, in the United States and grouped them into one of three fitness categories — low, middle or high.” acording to http://health.msn.com.

“Nearly 33 percent of adults who saw a doctor in the previous year said they were told to exercise. That was up from about 23 percent in 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.” According to fox news today. This is good new since all chiropractors know that motion leads to health and happiness.

Some important rules for new exercise programs. Start slow don’t over do it, this is the quickest way to kill a workout routine. You should walk 5 minutes the first day not 1 hour and build to it slowly over 2-3 weeks, or use light weights to start. Find a routine that excites you or a workout partner who can keep you focused. Consider core strengthening and cardiovascular as the most important activities followed by flexibility. Finally read our blog on exercise mistakes.

Migraine headaches yes children get them too!

Today on Fox News Dr. Manny Alvarez disused children and migraines. He is quoted as saying “I have an 8 year old son who is suffering from migraines. One time, his migraine was so intense, he cried all the way to the ER, after we tried unsuccessfully to treat it at home. I have been told that there are adult medications for migraines that can be used on children in a smaller dosage. However, according to my pediatrician, they have not been tested on children”.

So where dose that leave you. You can try untested adult medications or consult a chiropractor. Chiropractors treat migraines by identifying and treating the triggers that cause the migraines. I have been very successful treating these conditions in all ages. See my blog post on migraines hear for more information.

Ice is almost always safe, where heat can cause more damage. If you have an ice allergy or major vascular problem you should consult your physician first. To use ice apply for 15 to 20 min. then leave off for at least an hour. If you use anything other than water ice put a towel or tee shirt between you and the gel pack. The gel pack is the temperature of the freezer and can give you ice burn otherwise.

Stress and Your Senses

What is stress and how dose it effect our life? It is the flight or fight response and is controlled by the autonomic nervous system specifically the sympathetic side. Stress is counteracted by the parasympathetic nervous system. The stress response is caused when neurotransmitters are released from the sympathetic nervous system and has the following effects. Stress will dilates pupils, Increases heart rate, force heart contraction, constricts blood vessels, dilates bronchioles of the lungs, activates sweat secretion, inhibits peristalsis of the stomach, and increases renal secretion.

What dose this mean to you? The effect on the heart all lead to increased blood pressure and the changes in the organ systems lead to an increased need for hormones which require cholesterol to produce. This means that chronic stress in your life lead to increased blood pressure and increased cholesterol. Home many people do you know with these problems. As well as these two major problems chronic stress can lead to diabetes and many other chronic problems.

So where dose chronic stress come from? It comes from our daily lives. It comes from our work place, worrying about our family’s, driving your car at 50 or 60 miles an hour (we did not evolve to travel at these speeds), poor diet, and stress on our central nervous system (aka subluxation yes chiropractic care can help reduce stress).

So what can you do to help reduce stress in your life? There are several things you can do. First find 10-15 minutes a day dedicated to you. What ever activity relaxes you is what you should do. Some suggestions are read a good book, take a walk, exercise, take a swim, or whatever it is for you, do it. You should engage all of your senses to reduce stress.

Use taste to reduce stress. There’s nothing like a soothing cup of tea and your favorite dessert to take some of the edge off a hectic, stressful day. When this is combined with a little personal time, it can greatly reduce stress.

Next you can use touch to help reduce stress. When you’re overworked, overstressed, overwhelmed and just plain over it, find the time to escape and experience the power of touch. Schedule a chiropractic adjustment or a massage, or retreat into the soothing, stress-releasing luxury of a bubble bath. This will change your attitude in a moments.

Sight is another way to combat stress. Daily life is a major source of stress, and it only gets worse when the work hours get long and the days get short. In fact, during the winter months, many people never see day light except through the office window. We arrive at work before sunrise and leaving after sunset. Take a midday walk around the block and open your eyes to what the world has to offer, or at night, turn off the glare and light a few calming candles instead.

We all know how the smell of mom or grandmas apple pie can calm us so smell can also help you control your stress. The next time you’re on the brink of losing it, let your nose take you to a better place. Just try to stay stressed after smelling your favorite food , and don’t discount the power of a scented candle or two. You should replace the unpleasantness of another dreary day with the aroma of peace and tranquility.

Finlay using your sense of hearing can help combat stress. When was the last time you truly appreciated the lyrics, melody and arrangement of a song? Music has an incredible ability to soothe the soul, but many of us don’t take the time to listen. Tune out the stress and tune into the relaxing power of music .

If you want to improve your health and control the big three high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes learn to control your stress. Find the me time in your day and you will have more quality time for the people around you. It will make the world a brighter nicer place for you and your loved ones.

It is important to remember that for is the most important thing wen performing these exercises not the amount of weight or repetitions, so start slow and work into the shoulder exercise over several weeks. It is also important to work both shoulders evenly don’t neglect the good shoulder but keep it light with the good shoulder until the injured one caches up. It is important to maintain balance at all time you don’t want to injury the good shoulder so if you can only do 8 reps on the injured side do 8 with the good side.

Start with exercise 1,2, and 3 on week one, In week 2 to 4 add exercises 4 and 5. and after 1 to 2 months add exercise 6. The rate at which you add these exercises depends on how you feel don’t over do it but keep moving forward. This is a routine that should be performed 2-4 times a week for the rest of your life. It will help you avoid future injuries as well and can be used to prevent injuries. The bad shoulder will catch up don’t worry and good luck.
