Quick Tip: Pop Corn the Healthy Way

popcorn the healthy way

From Fox News

“The Toxicologist Won’t Eat: Microwave Popcorn
Olga Naidenko, is a senior scientist for the Environmental Working Group.

The problem: Chemicals, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), in the lining of the bag, are part of a class of compounds that may be linked to infertility in humans, according to a recent study from UCLA. In animal testing, the chemicals cause liver, testicular, and pancreatic cancer. Studies show that microwaving causes the chemicals to vaporize–and migrate into your popcorn. “They stay in your body for years and accumulate there,” says Naidenko, which is why researchers worry that levels in humans could approach the amounts causing cancers in laboratory animals. DuPont and other manufacturers have promised to phase out PFOA by 2015 under a voluntary EPA plan, but millions of bags of popcorn will be sold between now and then.

The solution: Pop natural kernels the old-fashioned way: in a skillet. For flavorings, you can add real butter or dried seasonings, such as dillweed, vegetable flakes, or soup mix.

Budget tip: Popping your own popcorn is dirt cheap

There are a few other ways that you could prepare your pop corn. There is always the trusty air popper. If that is not convenient enough for you why don’t you prepare it the way we do in our house. Get the brown paper sandwich bags and place between 1/8 and 1/4 cup of pop corn kernels in the bag. Fold the top of the bag over 3 times and place in the microwave and pop just like the microwave pop corn from the store. After that remove the bag and add the topping of your choice. The healthiest way is probably the air popper but with a 12 year old in the house the microwaved version is sure convenient and yes it is dirt cheap you can get 500 brown bags at Sams Club very cheap and the pop corn is much cheaper loose.

Quick Tip: Antibiotics Don’t Fight Most Sinus Infections

The new study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, and reported on Fox News, “found antibiotics didn’t ease patients’ sinus symptoms or get them back to work any sooner than an inactive placebo pill.”

So what should you do? There are several facts to keep in mind. The first is,  when healthy your body is programmed to fight off these infections more efficiently than any antibiotic. The fever, chills, coughing, and runny noes are all symptoms of the cold. These symptoms are also the bodies way of fighting the infection. The fever kills the infection by raising your body temperature above the temperature at which the infection can survive, the cough is expelling the germs and dead tissue from your body, and the mucus is full of lysosomes that kill both bacteria and viruses. Sure you fell terrible but this is how you get better.

So next time you get that tickle in the back of your throat, let the symptoms get you better. Don’t supress the fever and the cough and also let mucus do its job. Why not help your body. Wrap your self up in a blanket, drink hot liquids (raises the temperature in the throat helping kill the infection), and keep yourself hydrated. You may fell terrible but you will often recover quicker than suppressing your bodies natural immune response and it will work far better than antibiotics.

Quick Tip More Doctors Recommending Exercise

“Nearly 33 percent of adults who saw a doctor in the previous year said they were told to exercise. That was up from about 23 percent in 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.” According to fox news today. This is good new since all chiropractors know that motion leads to health and happiness.

Some important rules for new exercise programs. Start slow don’t over do it, this is the quickest way to kill a workout routine.  You should walk 5 minutes the first day not 1 hour and build to it slowly over 2-3 weeks, or use light weights to start. Find a routine that excites you or a workout partner who can keep you focused. Consider core strengthening and cardiovascular as the most important activities followed by flexibility. Finally read our blog on exercise mistakes.

Quick Tip Children and Migraine Headaches

Migraine headaches yes children get them too!

Today on Fox News Dr. Manny Alvarez disused children and migraines. He is quoted as saying “I have an 8 year old son who is suffering from migraines. One time, his migraine was so intense, he cried all the way to the ER, after we tried unsuccessfully to treat it at home. I have been told that there are adult medications for migraines that can be used on children in a smaller dosage. However, according to my pediatrician, they have not been tested on children”.

So where dose that leave you. You can try untested adult medications or consult a chiropractor. Chiropractors treat migraines by identifying and treating the triggers that cause the migraines. I have been very successful treating these conditions in all ages. See my blog post on migraines hear for more information.

Quick Tip Ice or Heat

Should I pick ice or heat? Ice is almost always safe, where heat can cause more damage to the area of injury. If you have an ice allergy or major vascular problem you should consult your physician first. Heat on the other hand is a great pain reliever but it increases inflammation. In conditions such as back injuries, sprains or strains and sports related injuries more inflammation equals more tissue damage and a longer period to heal.
So if you have low back pain or neck pain you should initially use ice until consulting with a physician. To use ice apply for 15 to 20 min. then leave off for at least an hour. If you use anything other than water ice put a towel or tee shirt between you and the gel pack. The gel pack is the temperature of the freezer and can give you ice burn otherwise.
It is important to remember that the acute phays can last several weeks due to re injury and does not necessarily fit the ice for three days while acute then use heat.
